Jester's Patience
Solitaire has been reinvented a thousand times, but Jester's Patience is the first version in years that made our whole desk lean in. Two joker cards wander the tableau on their own schedule, and every ten moves they swap places with a random card — sometimes rescuing a buried ace, sometimes burying your best run. Learning to plan around their rhythm is the entire game, and it is a joy.
The pacing suits a commute perfectly: a standard deal takes six to eight minutes, and the daily deal is identical for everyone, which fuelled a friendly rivalry between our Sydney and Melbourne editors for a fortnight. The parchment-and-violet art style stays readable even on small screens.
